Pillars of Smoke is an off-beat Israeli mystery series set in Israel’s remote, rural Golan Heights. Drawing inspiration as much from Twin Peaks as from Northern Exposure, and combining suspense, humor and a quirky, stylized vision, the story revolves around the disappearance of an entire community, and the subsequent police investigation which unearths the darkest secrets of the region and its inhabitants.

On his morning rounds, a mail carrier in the northern Golan Heights discovers that the small, isolated kibbutz known as Pillars of Smoke, home to 37 men, women and children, has been mysteriously abandoned.

The members were known to be a reclusive ideological community, led by a shady guru known as Enosh, and local authorities fear he may have led them on a path to self-destruction. A skeptical investigator named Leah Kafka, whose specialty– and obsession– is cults and their malevolent leaders, is dispatched by the Police Commissioner to the the remote region to try and make sense of the disappearance.
